Knowing Jesus

I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. John 14:6

Romans Chapter 15 Study Notes

Overview: Chapter 15 verses 1-13 are a continuation of chapter 14. Ro 14 through 15:13 contain a section of scripture promoting unity in the church. More specifically, this scripture guides us on how to resolve inevitable conflict among Christians who are identified as either “strong” or “weak”. “Strong” Christians are defined as those who are totally comfortable with the liberties and freedoms associated with the new covenant. “Weak” Christians are defined as those who still feel bound by Old Testament dietary restrictions (and Sabbath Day restrictions and requirements to observe the festival; Old Testament moral law, of course, is still applicable). “Weak” Christians could also include Gentiles who come from false religions and still feel bound by any of the doctrines or activities associated with that false religion. This only applies to neutral (non-sin) issues.

Verse 1: Be understanding of perspective others have based on their background (eating unclean foods) even when it means you have to relinquish your freedom in that area to avoid causing your brother anxiety.

Verse 2: Disregard for self. As “strong” Christians, our lives should be defined by being supportive and boosting the faith of our Christian brothers and sisters instead of charging forward and leaving others behind.

Verse 3: Conformity to Christ. Jesus Christ provided the ultimate example of living a selfless life and being completely dedicated to the welfare of others.

Verse 4: Submission to Scripture. We know that Bible study is important and is one of the ways that we commune with God, but the reference to “written in earlier times” makes it clear that we are still called to study and know the old testament to embellish our perseverance, encouragement, and hope.

Verse 5: Dependence on divine power. This verse is one of the affirmations that we are fallen people in a fallen world and very limited (perhaps incapable) of making progress on our own, but it is God who gives perseverance, and encouragement, and the ability to be united under Jesus Christ.

Verse 6: Glorify God. The end game here is to realize our dependence on God to be unified, and also to give God the glory for creation, for provision, for salvation, for spiritual growth, and for our inclusion and eternal participation in God’s kingdom.
